Babe's feet

I thought Nicole might find it interesting to see a progress update on Babe's feet - here are a couple of photos of a front foot photographed one month apart.  You can now see a good growth of new hoof coming down from the top - thanks to all those lovely herbs and doing lots moving about on our different surfaces.

You can see the lines in the middle section of the hoof which show the periods of laminitis and trauma in the hoof  - these are getting further down the foot as the new growth comes down and the contact part of the foot wears away.

The new hoof is growing down at a new angle which will be right for the new alignment of the hoof and pedal bone...so at the moment the bottom of the hoof is on the old alignment angle and the top is at the new angle...everything is sorting itself out.

The rasp type marks in the top photo are not caused by a hoof rasp but by the pea gravel which has worn down the front of the foot.  Each time Babe had had her feet trimmed by a farrier before coming to us for rehab she was footsore - even sitting on the fence trying to take the weight off of her feet.  The surfaces here have been so crucial to her naturally trimming her feet at her own pace.  Her boots have been such a help too - helping to keep her on the move and strengthening her feet.

The dry weather has been really helpful and she's improving and strengthening the soles of her feet.  It's not a task many people would take on but Babe is making great progress for a pony with pedal bone rotation in all 4 feet - I will try to take a video soon.
