Lulu Finds A New Home

Lulu has been out on loan in North Devon for 5 years at a lovely home where she's had lots of fun learning to do lots of things - she's become a great children's riding pony and has turned out to be a star at clear round show jumping.  Her fosterer Heather contacted us recently to say that Lulu needed to find a new home as she had no regular riders and work to keep her in shape.  Lulu's very much loved there and they are very sad to see her go...the kids who had been riding her have moved on...so could we find somewhere just right for Lulu...?

...Just before Christmas one of Lulu's previous fosterers, Tracey, had been in touch to find out how she was doing....so on hearing that Lulu was becoming available for loan again we contacted Tracey and her family and they jumped at the chance to have Lulu back again.  Harriet, who was 3 years old the last time they had Lulu is now 12 years old and is very excited at the prospect of having Lulu back again.  All the home checks and references are complete so Lulu should be moving at the weekend.  How wonderful that Lulu has such a dedicated fan club!

Pony Adventures

Arthur and Frodo had an adventure out with Faie and Peter today along the country lanes...with some stops for cow parsley munching of course!  We had an email this week to say that our insurers have decided not to cover pet rescues any more so we need to find another company before our policy expires.  We really hope it won't impact on the youngsters coming, and the ponies taking part in the parade at St John's Fayre as so many companies prevent this from happening now...a bit of a worry at the moment but we're trying to find a like for like replacement!  We're continuing our pony training for St John's Fayre as normal - today with flag waving, majorette batons, and Faie's stiltwalking!

Thank you to Graham for his donation of £20 for the ponies this week!

Dan's First Rosette!

Today Charlie was able to capture this shot of Dan in the sunshine - an opportunity for Dan to show off his first ever rosette that he won in his Horse Agility competition last month.  He looks rather proud I think :0)

Rolling Again

With the weather having been so nice again, the last two days have been all about getting the fields rolled - and this time neither Faye nor Ted got the tractors stuck so we scored 100% success there!!

Just a couple of gateways that aren't quite passable yet but otherwise the fields look much smarter and are much easier to walk across.

The ponies were quite excited after the rolling was finished...as they can go even faster with their running about, playing adventures!

Frodo was the last in!
The field's looking very smart!

We need to say thank you to Travis Perkins in Tiverton for giving us free delivery on our pea gravel delivery last week...and thank you to Ann who very kindly sent the ponies a donation as an Easter present - we really appreciate that!

Happy Easter Everyone!

We've been really enjoying the nice weather that's arrived for Easter!  This morning we welcomed our visitors Thea and Mary, who were kind enough to bring lots of delicious apples for the ponies, items for our stalls and a donation from the Dunster Meditation group - thank you ladies!

This afternoon we moved over half a tonne of pea gravel to top up our reserves around the yard...we managed to get it all moved in one go so there were Easter eggs to reward the efforts of our workers!

Stilt Walking

We were talking the other day about how we could get the ponies used to the stilt walkers in the parade at St John's Fayre...when Faie announced that she does stilt walking so she could bring her stilts along for the ponies to see...perfect! And very accomplished she is too!  Here's Faie getting Arthur accustomed to people on stilts!

April's Calendar

Foal on Dartmoor
All of our ponies were born out on the open moors and started their lives wild roaming around with their mares and natural herd groups...learning all about horse behaviour and communication...the best foundation any horse could hope for...it's only when they started encountering people that it all went wrong!  Of course it doesn't have to be like that and there are owners working hard to make sure that their foals have the best first interaction with people possible...

...Foals are very beautiful...and the tourists love to see them...but at the moment any foals born on Dartmoor have a very bleak future - huge numbers are slaughtered every year and have a history of being illegally transported live to Europe.  Foals are born as a result of tradition only to be slaughtered a few months later...and the next year it starts all over again.   We want to see that change and really want to encourage those who are trying to stop breeding and bring about change on the moors by removing stallions and running vasectomised males.

So April's calendar photo is about encouraging people to truly think about the best interests and futures of the ponies...and to put the ponies first...not egos, unethical profits and tradition.
